CITRUS HEIGHTS, Calif. -- Anabel Medina Garrigues and Neal Skupski came through again for the California Dream.
For the second consecutive home match, Medina Garrigues and Skupski lifted California to a victory by prevailing in the final set.
They beat Germans Andre Begemann and Anna-Lena Groenefeld 5-2 in mixed doubles to give the Dream a critical 22-19 victory over the Springfield (Mo.) Lasers on Tuesday night in a World TeamTennis match at Dream Stadium at Sunrise Mall.
California coach David Macpherson, a former Sacramento Capital, said Medina Garrigues and Skupski "seem to have great chemistry. They really justified my belief in them again tonight, stepping up when it mattered."
Medina Garrigues, a 32-year-old Spaniard, and Skupski, 25, of Great Britain won 5-1 on Saturday night as California beat the Boston Lobsters 20-17.
The coach of the home team chooses the order of sets and usually puts his strongest player or pairing last.
California moved into sole possession of second place in the Western Conference at 4-4 with six regular-season matches remaining. The Austin Aces lead the conference at 7-0.
The San Diego Aviators trail the Dream by one-half match at 3-4, and Springfield is last at 2-6. San Diego will host California tonight.
The top two teams in each conference advance to the playoffs, July 30-Aug. 2.
