Former Stanford star Kristie Ahn soared 127 places to No. 338 in the world this week after winning the recent $25,000 Changwon (South Korea) Challenger.
Ahn, who will turn 23 on Monday, did not lose a set in her five matches. She benefited from two second-set retirements, one in the first round and the other in the final against Ye-Ra Lee of South Korea.
It was Ahn's first singles championship since the $25,000 Hammond (La.) Challenger in 2009 and her first title of any kind since she paired with ex-Stanford teammate Nicole Gibbs in doubles at the $50,000 Raleigh (N.C.) Challenger in 2010.
The 5-foot-5 (1.65-meter) Ahn, from Upper Saddle River, N.J., has been plagued by injuries since her junior days. When healthy, however, she has had impressive results.
At 16, Ahn qualified for the 2008 U.S. Open in women's singles before losing to Dinara Safina 6-3, 6-4 in the first round. Safina was ranked seventh at the time and reached No. 1 the following year.
Ahn advanced to the semifinals of the $25,000 Redding Challenger as a qualifier in 2012 and the quarterfinals there in 2014. She gave Stanford the 2013 NCAA team title, winning the deciding match in a 4-3 victory over Texas A&M in the final.
