Vandeweghe falls to eighth seed in Carlsbad

Only two days after finishing the tournament of her life, CoCo Vandeweghe faced eighth-seeded Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa on Tuesday night in the first round of the Mercury Insurance Open in the San Diego suburb of Carlsbad.
Predictably, the 20-year-old wild card from nearby Rancho Santa Fe lost 6-2, 7-6 (4). In addition to playing a seed, Vandeweghe was faced with the challenge of preparing mentally so soon after reaching the final of the Bank of the West Classic at Stanford as a lucky loser.
Vandeweghe, who's scheduled to join the Sacramento Capitals on Sunday for the first of five matches to end the regular season in World TeamTennis, lost to top seed and defending champion Serena Williams 7-5, 6-3 in Sunday's final after holding a set point in the first set.
Vandeweghe's doubles draw in Carlsbad is even worse than in singles. Wild cards Mirjana Lucic of Croatia and Vandeweghe will face top-seeded Americans Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond in the opening round.
ATP World Tour in Atlanta -- Qualifier Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania coasted past Russian Dmitry Tursunov, a resident of Folsom in the Sacramento area, 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of the BB&T Atlanta Open.
The 22-year-old Berankis, only 5-foot-9 and 155 pounds, reached the quarterfinals of the SAP Open in San Jose in 2010 and 2011.
Part-time Capitals Kevin Anderson and Mardy Fish will play their second-round matches Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. Anderson, seeded fifth, will face 34-year-old Michael Russell of Houston, and Fish, seeded second, will meet Gilles Muller of Luxembourg.
Anderson is 6-foot-8 and Russell 5-8.
